2022-08-25 08:08:47 +0000 UTC View PostπConquer the Mountainπ This was taken in the Seweweekpoort (Seven Weeks Pass) last year. It is absolutely amazingly beautiful there. There are various explanations as to the origin of the name. The length of time it took a commando to take a band of highwaymen into the Great Karoo. The time it took the authorities to catch a rustler who escaped into the poort. Or the time it took a gang of brandy smugglers to return from Beaufort West. Another on is that the poort was named after the Reverend Zerwick. The locals could not pronounce his name and named it Seweweekspoort. My husband's answer: "That's how long it took to get through here!". Probably in an ox wagon! Most authorities though accept the explanation that the name is derived from that of the Seven-weekβs fern (Polystichum adiantiforum), called Seweweeksvaring in Afrikaans, which occurs in moist places and crevices. 2022-08-19 16:46:47 +0000 UTC View Postπ Sunny Day π This was taken next to the road leading into "Die Hel", also known as Gamkaskloof. Gamkas means "Lion" in the Koisan languange and a kloof is a "valley" in Afrikaans. They call this place "The Hell" not because it is so warm, but because of the road. There are two stories about where the name "Die Hel" came from. One is because of the steep incline of the road. The Afrikaans word "helling" means steep incline. The other famous story is that an animal inspector named Piet Botha visited the valley in the 40's, and he called his experience to get here as "hell". Just before 8am we were on the road. On the way home we reflect on the last few weeks... We had good times, we had more good times. Yes things happened along the way, but we always see the good time, even in bad times. I hurt my tail bone, I got scrapes, I bled, I got cold, I got wet and still I enjoyed every moment. It is the when life happens that we must enjoy and laugh at it. We had damage along the way but nothing that was non-repairable. It was just small things that will happen to anyone on a trip. Just take care not to let little things destroy a big, awesome holiday. We met awesome people along the way. People that might one day become friends. People that makes you realise there are lots of good people still in the country. We saw some amazing sunsets, sunrises, vistas, mountains, valleys, wildlife and waking up we just lied there listening to the singing of the birds. Everyday we got to explore and discover new and beautiful places. Even places weβve been before, is never the same. I hope you all enjoyed our journey with us. 2022-08-13 07:06:50 +0000 UTC View Postπ Day 22 π On the last full day of our epic trip, we woke early to beat the sun to our first photoshoot of the day: Forest Falls. But unfortunately the sun beat us there! By the time we got there we couldn't use the waterfall for any kind of decent photos. So we decided to come back in the afternoon. Just above Forest Falls is cascades that we did use for our first photoshoot of the day. After that we took a leisurely drive through the forest, discovered a small little waterfall and then found the best discovery of the day... For a few days now we wanted to walk on an old train bridge that we could see from our camp site. It was a difficult walk through grass and thorn bunches. I got scratched several times and once again I bled in the pursuit of unique photos π². The bridge crosses the Sabie river and at the highest point is easily a 100 to 150 meters high. We literally looked down at the top of trees. While walking on the bridge my husband got scared looking down...damn, I can't believe he was a pilot onceπ. From there we went to the Mac Mac pools to have a nice lunch and swim. We made a delicious lunch, relaxed a bit and then I was ready to get wet! We eagerly walked to the pools and then discovered that the pools had been fenced off. I was discussed, dismayed, disappointed and angry. In the past we swam in these pools for hours. We used the pools to cool off on hot summer days. Now we had to pay 72 ZAR to look at the pools through wire mesh. WTFπ‘π‘π‘. By now it was late in the afternoon, so we decided to go back to Forest Falls. We were elated to get there and discovered that the sun was in the perfect position. As usual our (un)lucky streak prevailed...there were other people there already. We did get some sneaky photos taken where they couldn't see me. However, the best spot for amazing photos was in full view of the couple. Luckily one of the persons came by to borrow some tissues. Boldly I asked him: βWould you mind if I posed topless in the water?β Looking a bit perplexed at me, he said he wouldn't mindπ. Thus they became the first people, (that we know of), to witness a Nonnie photoshoot. I thought I would feel shy or embarrassed but it didn't even bother me. I enjoyed the shoot. I enjoyed getting wet. It was a great shoot in the heat of the afternoon sun. From there we drove up to the cascades again where we had another photoshoot. From there we drove back to camp to spend our last night there. We had a long chat with our neighbouring campers and said goodnight for the last time. Tomorrow we must go homeβ¦ π₯π₯π₯ Have a great day everyone. I's sorry for the late posting, but I waited until we arrived home. Everything will soon be back to normal!
2022-08-12 14:56:19 +0000 UTC View Postπ Day 21 π After the party of the previous night and getting to bed late, we woke late in the morning. We stayed in camp and made breakfast before we decided to leave for town to search for presents for a upcoming birthday party. It is then that thing went wrong once againβ¦ We made sure everything is disconnected from the truck, but as we pulled away my husband saw the gazebo collapse π²! Getting out to inspect what happened, we saw that one of the poles of the gazebo was completely bend! What happened was that the gazebo got stuck to the roof rack of the truck and we never saw it. As we pulled away the gazebo started to follow the truck. It probably also wanted to go on an outing for the dayπ! We did manage to get it straighten but parts of the gazebo will have to be replaced. Luckily we have lots of spares for the gazebo at home. Luckily one of the present we wanted to buy was beer and that f0rced us to go for a craft beer tastingπ»! Of seven beers tasted, we only liked two of the beers in the end. It was really nice tasting different beers. Searching for another present turned out to be futile. Nothing was found. We decided to go to a nearby waterfall and spend 3 hours there just enjoying the rest of the afternoon. We drove back to camp and had some supper. Except for nearly destroying the gazebo, it was a great day indeed! Have a great day everyone! πππππππππ

But while weβre still here relaxing in nature, we will enjoy every minute. So late in the morning we are off to town. We need some pills for my (still) sore tailbone, pick up the laundry and grab something to eat. But of course, our luck prevailed. The pharmacy was closed... The laundromat was closed... But we did got something to eat though. Yeah!! Happy days! After breakfast we did get the pharmacy open at last! I got the medicine I needed and it did wonders for me. Then it was time to take a leisurely drive through the forest. And what a drive it turned out to be! We saw some stunning rock formations, a βfern waterfallβ, like I want to call it and had a great time on a soft carpet of pine needles. Here we also made some videos and they were hillarious! "And the Oscar goes to... Any one but Nonnie!" It was stil great fun! We arrived back at camp in the afternoon and had a great impromptu party with the campers next to us. We chatted until late in the night and had much too much wine and beer around a big and warm fire. It was an awesome day! 2022-08-09 05:13:50 +0000 UTC View Postπ Day 19 π We had a very bad night sleeping. Both of us was more awake than asleep. Me because my tailbone was still very sore, my husband because I kept on waking him with all my turning and fretting in bed. But eventually we got up to face another day, tired or not. After 18 days on the road, I eventually out of panties. So the first thing we did was take some laundry to a local laundromat. The second (can you believe it), most important thing to do was get the beer restocked. Once those chores was completed, we were on the road. We had some nice photoshoots next to the road, but then we hit the jackpot. We discovered a small cave that weβve missed before. We have driven past it in the past, but never stopped here to investigate. We had and awesome time playing in the cave. I have a vivid imagination, so all the time I was looking for tracks of snakes, creepies and crawlies. I was also looking for the spiders in the webs, all the time imagining what is hiding in all the crevices of the rocks. We also enjoyed a beer here, I took lots of photos on my cellphone, but eventually we had to leave. While here at the cave, two motorcycle riders stopped and chatted with us. They said we must got to the highest point in that area. A place with lots of radio towers! We plotted the towers, but had to get some food first. We were starving at that stage. So we continued on to Pelgrimβs Rest where we had a nice meal. The meal was a burger eaten out of a shovel! After having our stomachs filled with food, we were off to discover the highest point in the area. It was only a short drive away, but it was already late in the afternoon we were reached the top of the world! The view was amazing against the very low and fast setting sun! Turning the truck around, we rushed down the hill to try and get back to camp before dark. We drove into camp as the sun disappeared behind the mountains. We finished of the day sitting around a fire and having a glass of wine. A very good day indeed. I just hope we will have a better nights rest tonight! Have a good day everyone! πππππππππ

2022-08-08 01:35:55 +0000 UTC View Postπ Day 17 π We were early out of bed. We had to pack up the camp and get the front tire fixed. We were also moving camp, so everything had to be packed away. Because the leak was on the sidewall of the tire, we feared that we might have to buy a new tire π². We arrived with the doors still closed and had to wait a few minutes. After explaining the problem, they got to work on the tire. We sat and waited for the bad newsβ¦itβs always bad news for us! As you might have noticed on this trip, our luck is only bad luckβ¦π π After a while the repair man came back. It was fixed π!!! The price to have the tire fixed was only R150.00 ($10). A lucky break for a change! We immediately set of for a nice forest drive to pass the day. We just relaxed, took some photos and enjoyed the warm sunny day. We did check the tire regularly, but all was well. We arrived early at our new campsite and of course our luck, or lack of luck, prevailed. The campsite had a problem with the power supply to the campsite. They promised it will be fixed within a few hours. So we just stopped and didnβt pitch camp, in case they could not get the power fixed. By late afternoon the power was on! We pitched camp and had a great evening with a beautiful sunset. All in all it was a great and relaxing day for us! Have a great day everyone! πππππππππ
2022-08-07 07:14:07 +0000 UTC View Postπ Day 16 π After the long previous day, we were exhausted and slept very well. We woke up rested and refreshed and ready for another day of adventure. And boy, did we have an adventure again. The first ruin we wanted to take photos at, was so overgrown we couldnβt get close to it. So we had to move on to the next set of ruins. Here we had a great time and took lots of photos. So far the day was going well indeed. The third set of ruins was also completely overgrown so we settled for a small waterfall that was close to us. We spend a long time at the waterfall. I tried to bribe my husband for me to get wet. A womanβs got to do what a womanβs got to do. But little did I know how that would backfireβ¦Literary back fire on me! I got very wet, played in the mud and really enjoyed the water. The water was nice and warm and very pleasant. For the curtain call, my husband asked me to stand on a rock. I chose a rock that looked the flattest to me. As I got on the rock, I realized I made a mistakeβ¦ The rock was as slippery as a banana peel. I desperately tried to stay on the rock. Then one foot slipped offβ¦and then the other foot still on the slippery rock flew out from under me and I fell on the rock on my coccyx, also know as the tailbone. It was very sore. βAre you OKβ, my husband asked. βI donβt know!!β I said through gritted teeth. I sat there wondering if I will be able to move, to walk back to the vehicle. But like a champion, I got up, shrugged it of and got out of the waterfall. My coccyx was very sore indeed! By this time we were starving, so we drove to a nearby town for a nice meal. I now deserved it more than ever! But of course it is never easyβ¦ There were a lot of roadworks on the way there. In the town there was also roadworks, with a lot of the streets blocked off. So we could not get to the restaurants and when we got to one, or two, or three, they are were closed! By this time I was so hungry my stomach was eating my liver! After a long search we found a lonesome restaurant that was open and we had a nice meal and a glass of wine. My liver survivedβ¦ Getting back to camp was uneventful. Untilβ¦ Sitting by the fire, my husband suddenly jumped up and ran to the truck. Dumbfounded I followed him to see what got him so excited. The right front wheel had a puncture and was slowly deflating! Another problem that needs to be solved tomorrow! Have a great day everyone! πππππππππ
