The most famous house in the town is called the "Owl House". The house belonged to Helen Martins, who created many cement owls with glass bottom eyes. Driven to despair by the dullness of her daily life, she took steps to transform her world with light, colour and texture. Helen created the owls, mermaids, camel and pilgrims between 1945 and 1976. At the age of 78, crippled with arthritis and in suffering increased loss of vision, Helen took her own life.
