Please don't judge😅) [ Throwback Thursday ] This was taken 11 years ago in the woods just north of the quint little town of Haenertsburg. The town was established in 1886 with the discovery of gold by Carl Ferdinand Haenert. Frequent mists and relatively high rainfall have created a lush vegetation with forest patches occupying the gullies which dot the rolling grasslands and surrounding mountains. However, large areas of rare, and botanically very diverse, grassland have been planted to timber (primarily timber for pulping). I find this so sad. I love the pine forest, but I always think of the native plants it had to replace. When we drive through the pine forest, the are patches where the native flora still flourishes...and I try and imagine what the forest looked liked before the pine trees got planted.
